Young Medicine Biography
Young Medicine are First Nations Artists that perform & promote Contemporary and Traditional Forms of Music, Dance and Art while sending a positive message of, “Be your own Person, and Follow your own Dreams”. Young Medicine are Multi-award winners. They have been awarded Best Blues Album 2014 at the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards & World Championship of Performing Arts: Gold, Silver & Bronze Medalists; They have been blessed to share their life experiences, culture and empowerment as performers, keynote speakers, motivation speakers and facilitating workshops with many topics such as Bullying, Women’s Rights, Empowerment, Indigenous Rights, Leadership, Role Modeling, Self-esteem, living in two worlds and much more. Young Medicine have been invited to many communities throughout the world such as: Canada, United States, Peru, Africa and China. Recently they travelled to New York City to perform and attend the United Nations Commission on Status of Women, to perform their new song, “We Miss You, U live” off their new album written for murdered and missing Indigenous women.
The artists perform: singing, guitar, cedar flute, harmonica, hand drum and rattle. They use contemporary and Traditional styles of powwow dancing to share stories and inspirational messages throughout the performance.
Curt comes from the Salteaux-Cree from Gordon’s and Cowessess First Nations in Saskatchewan. Curt Young is a Blues Rock artist, singer, songwriter and musician. He has been playing guitar for over twenty years and also plays bass, drums, cedar flute, piano, and harmonica. Curt comes from the Salteaux-Cree from Gordon’s and Cowessess First Nations in Saskatchewan. He is a three time nominee for Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards and a Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards Nominee. Curt has been highlighted and written stories in SAY magazine, New Tribe, 102.7 Co-op Radio, Aboriginal Voices Radio, and CBC Radio, CFWE, Indigenous Radio Waves. He’s performed over 2000 shows around the globe; including the: CP Spirit Train Olympic Tour which stopped in every major city across Canada; University Olympics in Harbin, China, Gathering of Nations in Albuquerque, New Mexico, & the World Indigenous People Conference on Education in Cuzco, Peru and Hawaii. Curt has had the opportunity to open up for many talented artists such as Colin James, Oscar Lopez, Tom Jackson, Derek Miller, Jesse Ferrell and many others.
Jamie is a co-founder of Young Medicine and Blackfoot from Kainai & Piikani Nations in Alberta; Jamie Medicine Crane is an educator, dancer, model, fashion designer and musician. She has a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree, Bachelor of Education Degree and Master’s in Education. Jamie was one of the first Native women to run in Miss Universe Canada 2003, and awarded Miss Congeniality; she also received the title Miss Blackfoot Canada. Jamie has been recognized with many awards by the YWCA Canada and YWCA Lethbridge-Young Woman of Distinction, Alberta Colleges- Provincial Award for Creating Excellence, from the Institute for Advancing Aboriginal Women-Esquao Award-Woman of Distinction, Aboriginal Council of Lethbridge and Blackfoot Cultural Society-Blackfoot Art Award. She was selected to represent Canada in the YWCA’s World council held in Nairobi, Kenya, Africa 2007. Jamie has been selected as a Canadian delegate and nominated for YWCA World Board at the World Council to Bangkok, Thailand in October 2015. She is currently a vice president on the YWCA Canada Board and has been teaching for ten years. She recently works with Alberta Education as Curriculum Manager for First Nation, Metis and Inuit Curriculum.
Young Medicine’s mission is to promote First Nations arts and inspire new artists that are in the arts; (Music, Dance, Visual Arts, Modeling, Fashion/Makeup/hair designers) in events they help plan, such as Rock’N the Nations, Community in Unity. Curt and Jamie hope to bring “Young Medicine” to the people of all cultures and of all ages to encourage unity, harmony and hope.
